Stop Hoarding Filters: What Actually Belongs in Your Kit (And What's Just Marketing Bait)
Somewhere between your first YouTube rabbit hole and your third B&H order, you probably convinced yourself you needed filters. Maybe a protective UV filter for every lens. A few NDs. A polarizer. Maybe a variable ND because that sounded efficient. Fast forward six months, and you've got a Ziploc bag full of screw-on glass collecting dust in your camera bag — and a credit card statement that still stings.
You're not alone. Filters are one of the most aggressively marketed categories in the camera world, and the pitch is almost always the same: protect your investment, control your light, get cinematic results. Some of that is real. A lot of it is noise. Let's sort out which is which.
The Protective Filter Problem
Walk into any camera store and buy a new lens. Before you even make it to the door, someone will ask if you want a UV filter to protect the front element. It feels responsible. It feels smart. And the filter is usually $30–$80, which seems cheap compared to the lens you just bought.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: modern lens coatings are tougher than they used to be, and a cheap UV filter can actually degrade your image quality more than a minor smudge on the front element ever would. Low-quality protective filters introduce flare, reduce contrast, and add extra glass surfaces that scatter light in unflattering ways — especially when you're shooting into any kind of bright source.
That doesn't mean protective filters are worthless. If you're shooting in genuinely harsh conditions — dusty trails, beach spray, heavy rain — a quality filter from brands like B+W or Hoya HD adds a real layer of insurance. The key word is quality. A $15 Amazon filter does more harm than good. A $70–$100 multi-coated filter from a reputable brand? That's a different conversation.
The honest rule: If your lens rarely leaves a controlled environment — studio, indoor events, casual outdoor use — skip the protective filter entirely. If you're regularly shooting in rough conditions, invest in one good one and stop there.
ND Filters: The One Category That Actually Earns Its Keep
Neutral density filters are the real workhorses of the filter world, and unlike most gear debates, this one isn't really up for argument. If you're shooting video, you will eventually need ND filtration.
Here's why: cinematic video relies on the 180-degree shutter rule, which means your shutter speed should be roughly double your frame rate. Shooting at 24fps? Your shutter should be around 1/50. At 30fps, you're looking at 1/60. The problem is that in bright daylight, those shutter speeds let in way too much light — and if you compensate by stopping down your aperture, you lose the shallow depth of field that makes footage look expensive.
ND filters solve this by cutting the amount of light hitting your sensor without changing color or depth of field. You get proper motion blur, a wide aperture, and controlled exposure. That's a genuine creative tool, not a marketing gimmick.
What to actually buy:
- A variable ND (typically covering ND2 to ND400 or similar) is the most flexible option for run-and-gun shooters. Just be aware that cheap variable NDs create a cross-polarization effect at their strongest settings, producing an X-shaped dark pattern across your frame. Spend at least $80–$120 on a reputable variable ND, or the cure becomes worse than the disease.
- Fixed ND stops (ND4, ND8, ND64) give you cleaner optical quality than most variable options and are worth considering if you shoot in predictable conditions. A 3-stop (ND8) and a 6-stop (ND64) cover most outdoor scenarios between them.
For photographers, NDs are less essential day-to-day but become critical for long exposure work — waterfalls, light trails, silky ocean shots. If that's part of your creative output, a solid 6-stop or 10-stop fixed ND is worth owning.
Polarizers: More Useful Than You Think, Less Necessary Than They're Sold
A circular polarizing filter (CPL) does something no amount of post-processing can fully replicate: it physically removes reflected light from non-metallic surfaces. Glass, water, wet pavement — a CPL cuts through glare that would otherwise wash out your shot.
It also deepens blue skies and makes foliage pop with a richness that feels almost three-dimensional. For landscape photographers and outdoor videographers, a good CPL is legitimately one of the most impactful pieces of glass you can buy.
But here's the catch: polarizers only work when the light source is roughly 90 degrees from your shooting angle. Pointing directly into the sun or directly away from it, a CPL does almost nothing. It also costs you about 1.5 to 2 stops of light, which can be a real problem in low-light situations.
Who actually needs one: Travel photographers, landscape shooters, anyone who regularly films near water or through glass. If you're a studio creator, a podcast host, or a primarily indoor shooter, a CPL will sit in your bag unused.
The Decision Tree: Which Filters Belong in Your Kit
Instead of buying everything and sorting it out later, run through this before your next purchase:
1. Do you shoot video outdoors in daylight? → Yes: A variable ND (quality brand) or a small set of fixed NDs is genuinely useful. Start here. → No: You can skip NDs for now.
2. Do you shoot landscapes, seascapes, or near reflective surfaces? → Yes: A circular polarizer is worth it. Get a mid-tier or better option. → No: Skip it unless you're curious to experiment.
3. Do you regularly shoot in harsh physical environments (dust, spray, extreme weather)? → Yes: One quality multi-coated UV/protective filter per frequently-used lens is reasonable. → No: Leave the front cap on and stop worrying about it.
4. Have you seen a specific creative effect you want to replicate? → Research that specific filter (diffusion, black mist, star effect) before buying anything else. Special effects filters can be genuinely fun, but they're deeply workflow-specific.
The Sizing Problem Nobody Talks About
One more thing that quietly inflates filter costs: lens thread sizes. A 67mm filter won't fit a lens with a 77mm front element. If you own multiple lenses with different filter thread sizes — which most shooters do — you're either buying duplicates or you're leaving filters behind.
The smarter move is to buy your filters in the largest thread size you own, then use step-up rings (cheap, like $8–$15) to adapt them to smaller lenses. One good variable ND in 77mm or 82mm with a set of step-up rings beats five mediocre filters in five different sizes every single time.
Build Lean, Shoot Better
The filter industry has done a masterful job of making every option feel essential. The reality is that most creators can cover nearly every real-world shooting scenario with three things: one quality variable ND, one circular polarizer, and maybe one protective filter for their most-used lens in rough conditions.
That's a kit you can build for $150–$250 if you're selective about brands. Compare that to the $500+ that accumulates when you buy reactively — a filter here, a filter there, half of them the wrong size or wrong quality.
