So Why Does ProRes Exist If H.265 Is So Efficient?

When you're cutting footage, your software has to decode every frame it displays. Highly compressed codecs like H.264 and H.265 are "long GOP" formats, meaning they store only occasional full frames and fill in the gaps with data about what changed between frames. That's super efficient for storage, but it's a lot of work for your computer to constantly reconstruct those intermediate frames while you're scrubbing through a timeline.
ProRes stores far more complete frame data, which means your editing software doesn't have to work as hard. Cuts are smoother, color grading is more responsive, and you're less likely to see your preview drop to a slideshow when you stack effects. The tradeoff? ProRes files are massive. We're talking 4-10x larger than an equivalent H.264 file.
If you're shooting on a camera that records ProRes internally — like certain models from Sony, Canon, or Blackmagic — it's genuinely useful for serious post-production work. But if you're just uploading talking-head content to YouTube three times a week, recording ProRes is like driving a semi-truck to pick up groceries. Technically capable, but wildly overkill.
Bitrate: The Number Everyone Obsesses Over for the Wrong Reasons
Bitrate is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and tells you how much data is being recorded every second of video. Higher bitrate generally means more detail and less compression artifacting — but only up to a point, and only in the right context.
Here's where creators get burned: they see that their camera offers a 200Mbps mode and immediately assume it's better than the 50Mbps option. Sometimes that's true. But YouTube, for example, re-encodes every single video you upload using its own compression. Your 200Mbps masterpiece gets processed into something around 8-15Mbps for delivery to viewers. That doesn't mean high-bitrate recording is pointless — it gives you more flexibility in post and reduces generation loss during export — but it does mean there's a ceiling to what actually matters for your final output.

Matching Your Codec to Your Actual Workflow

You shoot and upload quickly (vlogs, social content, livestream highlights): H.264 or H.265 at a moderate bitrate. Keep it simple, keep it fast. You don't need ProRes for a 10-minute YouTube video that's going to be re-compressed on upload anyway.
You do heavy color grading or visual effects work: Consider a more edit-friendly format like ProRes, CinemaDNG, or your camera's RAW option if available. The larger files are worth it when you're spending hours in DaVinci Resolve pulling highlights and crushing shadows.
You're shooting on a budget camera with limited codec options: Learn what your camera actually records natively and optimize your export settings in post. A well-optimized H.264 export from Premiere or Final Cut can look excellent on any major platform.
You're archiving footage long-term: This is actually where higher-quality, less-compressed formats make the most sense. Archive in the best format your camera offers. Deliver in whatever the platform wants.
